Usability Test

Ricepo

Sep.2021 - Dec.2021

This project was done as a part of the Mobile Usable Design course. The purpose of this project was to improve the usability of Ricepo, a takeaway application that specializes in ordering Asian food. The project's focus will be to master usability testing and KJ analysis and apply it to Ricepo and get suggestions for optimization.

 Background

Ricepo is a takeaway application that offers Asian cuisine. Due to the friendly service and the availability of quality restaurants, Ricepo gradually became popular among students and workers, especially workers, in the local Boston. Ricepo is a good choice for workers who are busy with work at noon and want to have a good lunch delivered to work in time. After reviewing and experiencing Ricepo, I think Ricepo can be a better experience on the app side. The following research will suggest solutions and improvements based on the pain points in using Ricepo.

 Problem Statement

Workers in Boston are too busy to make their lunch due to their busy schedules. Therefore, they wanted a take-out app that would save time for work by not spending time on lunch.

 User Story

As a UX Designer working in Boston, I want delicious rice with a roasted eel that can be sent to the office during my meeting so that I can focus on the project of the newly developed mobile phone Application.

 Journey Map

Based on the character I created, Flora, I set up a user scenario and drew a journey to show her feelings and thoughts on using Ricepo. Through the Journey map, I listed possible opportunities for improvement.

 Ricepo Functional improvement

After studying Ricepo's application, I found several features that need to be refined and improved.

 Usability Test

After the feasibility test, I can use the user feedback on the experience to pretend to improve better suggestions.

Executive Summary

The Ricepo application was tested for usability in September 2021. Two participants participated the test. Each test was conducted for approximately 15 minutes. The evaluation was based on a mobile device on the iOS platform. Prototyping was done on Adobe XD. At the beginning of the test, users received a mobile device prepared by me to click on the link of the prototype design for testing. This test aimed to identify problems with the modified design and usability and to find solutions. The test report will raise critical recommendations.

User Profile

  • User A: Student

  • User B: Student

User scenarios

You want to order a beef fried rice during your lunch hour at work. Use Ricepo to find and place orders.

KJ analysis

After going through the Kj analysis, I discovered the strengths and weaknesses of my improved Ricepo.

Key Findings & Result of KJ Analysis

Main Result of KJ Analysis with outcome:

  • The text spacing is not uniform, making it difficult for users to understand.

  • The Icon of the order status on the home page is not obvious enough to express the meaning and thus confuse the users.

Main Findings during Usability test:

  • Two test users quickly understood my sliding module on the home page and menu bar during testing.

  • Smooth order placement process

  • Two testers were also confused by the "order status" icon in the upper right corner of the homepage

Recommendation

  • Modify the spacing of text and standardize it.

  • The icon of the order status on the home page is modified. Add a text description if necessary.

Final Prototype

Conclusion

After this project, I trained myself on usability testing of mobile and how to analyze the results of the tests. Through this project, I was able to understand better how user-centered design principles can be applied to the user perspective, from user research to usability testing. By identifying design problems and providing data and usability solutions based on the issues and research, I believe that honest user feedback and experience will optimize experience design.
